Amrita Richards
As a lifelong advocate for mental health in a culture that often dismisses its importance, I have channeled my passion into AGR Therapy. I strive to create a compassionate and culturally responsive counseling experience. Understanding the complexities of navigating multiple cultures, I have dedicated my work to serving individuals from diverse backgrounds, with a special focus on immigrants and children of immigrants. I recognize the unique challenges that come with bridging different worlds, and I am committed to offering a safe, empathetic space where you can address your mental health needs without fear of judgment. In a world that can often feel isolating, I’m here to ensure that you are seen, heard, and supported on your journey toward healing.
Specializing in EMDR
It all begins with an compassionate science-based therapy. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is designed to help you heal from trauma. By gently guiding your brain to process painful memories, EMDR can reduce the emotional weight these experiences carry, allowing you to move through life with greater peace and connection.
Trauma can leave us feeling disconnected or overwhelmed, but through EMDR, your brain and body can begin to heal. You may start to notice that the memories and feelings that once felt too much to handle no longer hold the same intensity. This shift can create space for more balance, calm, and emotional resilience in your life.
As you journey through this healing process, you may also experience improved relationships with others and a deeper sense of well-being. EMDR Therapy is not just about healing from trauma—it’s about rediscovering your ability to live fully with compassion for yourself and others.

-
Yes—when you schedule with me, you’ll be meeting directly with me. This is not a bait-and-switch setup. Unlike some practices that assign clients to student interns or associate therapists after intake, I personally handle all sessions from start to finish. I believe in building a consistent, trusting relationship with each client, and that starts from our very first conversation.
-
Please reach out via the Contact Us section below, or email me directly at agrtherapynyc@gmail.com. I will schedule a free phone consultation (approximately 10-15 minutes) to learn more about why you are seeking services and to determine if my practice can assist you. If we are a good fit, I will schedule an intake session to learn more about you, identify goals for treatment, and discuss our recommendations.
-
Each session is 45-55 minutes long, depending on frequency and other factors we will discuss during your intake. Many people find that their insurance companies cover part of their out of pocket fees, sometimes up to 100% depending on the benefits. Therapy costs are an investment in your physical, mental, and emotional health, and investing in this now will help you reap benefits that last long beyond your sessions!
-
My fees start at $125 for individual therapy and $225 for couples therapy.

AGR Therapy is currently in the process of becoming an in-network provider with select insurance companies. Please note that insurance paneling varies by state, so it is recommended that you contact your insurance provider directly to verify your mental health benefits.
If your insurance plan isn’t accepted in-network, many insurance providers still offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network psychotherapy services.
In either case, we provide monthly superbills (insurance-friendly statements) with all the necessary codes and information, which you can choose to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement or use with flexible spending accounts (FSA) or health savings accounts (HSA).
-
AGR Therapy has experience supporting clients who require a higher level of discretion due to the sensitive nature of their work. You have the option to forego using insurance altogether for privacy reasons.
The choice is entirely yours; if you choose to not use insurance, we do not report sessions to your health insurance.
-
Please call your insurance company and ask:
What is my coverage for mental health outpatient visits?
Do I have coverage for out-of-network mental health outpatient visits?
What is my deductible and has it been met?
What percentage of therapy service fees are covered? Please ask about the following CPT codes: consultation 90791, individual therapy 90834 & 90837.
How many visits are covered in a calendar year?
Do you cover telehealth visits?

Sliding scale payments may be accepted for clients in specific circumstances. Additionally, temporary sliding scale payments may be accepted for clients facing unexpected hardships. Please email agrtherapynyc@gmail.com to discuss requests.

My approach to therapy draws from EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Trauma Informed Care, and is sensitive to the ways in which race, ethnicity, orientation, gender, social class, and ability intersect. Through a systemic lens, I work collaboratively with you to promote healing, a greater sense of self-worth and a better understanding of your relationships.
-
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) helps you understand and heal the different parts of yourself. Just like a family is made up of different people with unique qualities, our inner world has different "parts" that shape how we feel and act. Some of these parts can be hurt by past experiences, causing confusion and inner conflict.
IFS is based on the idea that we all have the ability to heal ourselves. When we understand how our past affects who we are today, we can begin to make peace with our inner parts. This leads to feeling more connected to ourselves and others.
In IFS therapy, you approach your challenges with curiosity and kindness, without judgment. By doing this, you start healing and find more balance in your life—no matter where you are in your journey.

During your first session, I will ask you questions to get to know you and understand your reasons for coming to therapy. I want to learn about your history, what’s going on with you now, and learn about what you want to get out of therapy. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask them questions about how therapy works so you know what to expect.
-
Yes, AGR Therapy is an exclusively online therapy practice for your convenience. You’re busy and I want to make sure you can fit therapy into your demanding schedule. The platforms I use are completely secure, HIPAA compliant, and easy to access from anywhere, including laptops, phones, and tablets.
-
I kindly request a minimum of 24 hours notice to cancel your appointment. If you do not cancel your appointment at least 24 hours ahead of time or do not show for your appointment, you will be charged for the cost of service. This is to ensure that we are able to offer services to others should you be unable to attend. Please note that insurance companies do not typically reimburse for no show or late cancellation appointments. If we are able to reschedule within the same week, you will not charged a fee.
-
Yes, we accept all major debit/credit cards and as long as you can enter your HSA/FSA card number in the payment system like a debit/credit card, we can accept those payments. If you don’t have that option but would like us to provide you receipts for reimbursement, we can do that, as well.
-
Although the practice is fully remote, we can only offer counseling services if your residency is in NY, SC or FL state. Students who are enrolled in a state college or university in NY, SC or FL are eligible.
However, our coaching services can be provided for out of state residents on a state by state basis. Please reach out with specific questions regarding your state.

The amount of time therapy takes is different for each person. If you’re dealing with a short-term stressor that you want resolved, that will typically take less time than a problem you’ve been dealing with for a long while. For some, therapy is short-term, taking just a few months until they are satisfied with their progress. For others, therapy will become a part of their routine, helping them manage ongoing concerns in their life and having a safe outlet for them to explore themselves, their patterns, and understand themselves on a deeper level.
-
Starting from your first session, you and I will talk about what you want to get out of therapy. You may come in with a very specific goal or you may use therapy as a space to talk about ongoing events in your life. Regardless of your therapy goals, I will create a comfortable space for you to talk about how therapy is going so we are on the same page about the process. Ultimately, you will get more out of therapy if you are willing to put more into it. Growth takes place when you are willing to reflect on yourself and take what you are learning during sessions out into the world with you. Below are a few signs of progress that clients typically note:
You start noticing that your symptoms (anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc.) are less frequent or intense than before.
You’re able to function better at work, school, or in your personal relationships.
You start to find that you have a better understanding of yourself, your feelings, and your behaviors. You’ve gained insights and are making connections that you didn’t make before.
You might be using new coping skills that you’ve learned in therapy and they’re helping in your daily life.
People close to you may tell you that they have noticed positive changes.
